Watendlath. The Perfect Place
Watendlath is a hamlet and tarn situated 263m (863ft) up on the fells between
Thirlmere and Borrowdale. With a long narrow single track road as the only way
in and out and surrounded by lofty fells, Watendlath will be remembered for the
peace and seclusion that it offers.
The tarn is fed by Blee Tarn Gill which outflows into Watendlath Beck and feeds
Lodore Falls before finally merging with Derwentwater.
Ashness Bridge is crossed on the way up to Watendlath a mile or so after
leaving the Borrowdale Road. A little higher up the Watendlath road will be
found a parking area on the left and a viewing area on the right. This is
Surprise View and is the
Perfect Place
for panoramic views of Derwentwater and Borrowdale.
How to get there
The Watendlath access road is off the Borrowdale Road (B5289) 2 miles south of
Keswick at Barrow Bay. Watendlath lies 3 miles further to the south after
negotiating a very narrow single track road and has a pay car park.
