Hallin Fell. The Perfect Place
Hallin Fell is situated mid way along the eastern shore of Ullswater. With a
height of 388m (1273ft) its relative height is made all the more modest by the
height of the Coombs. The Coombs is the depression between Hallin Fell and Steel
Knotts and is the usual parking place for access to Hallin Fell.
Irrespective of its modest height, Hallin Fell is still accredited as a
Marilyn. A Marilyn (which is a play on the Scottish term Monro (Monroe) and
describes a mountain in excess of 3000m), is a hill with a relative height of
150m (492ft) above its surroundings. Despite its modest size Hallin Fell's
location makes up for it, providing excellent views along the northern section
of Ullswater, along the two major valleys of Martindale and across the
Helvellyn range.
A footpath circles the Fell and is a thoroughly enjoyable few hours walk. A
favourite place is the small 'beach' area at Howtown Wyke which is
accessible from the main footpath as a fork in the path and which descends
rapidly 15m to the water's edge. The
Perfect Place
to relax and enjoy Ullswater.
How to get there
Take the Howtown Road for about 5 miles to the south of Pooley Bridge. Two
parking areas are available; one on the right immediately before the winding
road rising up and over the Coombs. This location is ideal for access to the
path around Hallin Fell and Howtown Wyke.
A larger parking area is beyond the winding section of road at St. Peter's
new church.
