1st June 2009 - Ullswater (Waterside campsite)Having got a feel for the walking and photographic possibilities of Martindale and Haweswater (Mardale) in our visit of 4 May 2009, this two day solo trip was based at the Waterside campsite on the Howtown Road to allow further investigation of these two classic landscapes. My first day was a 4.45am sunrise start for a 12 mile walk from the new church of St. Peter in Martindale up onto High Street (at Wether Hill), then onto Kidsty Pike, Angle Tarn and finally Boredale Hause before returning over Beda Fell back into the Howe Grain valley. Many photographic opportunities were available and the highlight was witnessing the secluded and beautiful Angle Tarn, on probably the hottest day of the year so far, with its water more blue than could be thought possible. Day 2 also started at sunrise initially along the eastern edge of Ullswater south of Pooley Bridge. I seemed to make a friend of a photogenic swan who followed persistently along the shore and appeared in many shots. A visit also to Howtown Wyke along the path on the southern edge of Hallin Fell revealed, what I (so far!) consider, to be one of the most idyllic lakeside locations anywhere in the lake district. Finally a visit to Haweswater to achieve a long standing wish to view the Rigg from the upper reaches of the Old Corpse Road, and the photographic possibilities from along Rowantreethwaite Beck. A selection of photographs are shown in the panel on the right. Some of these and others, including more details of the photographs and the ability to purchase, can be found in the new Region pages below:- Martindale | Ullswater | Angle Tarn | Brother's Water | Haweswater My comments on the Waterside campsite at Ullswater can be found here. |
