Buttermere & Crummock Water

The Buttermere valley is in the north west of the lake district. It is occupied by three lakes; Buttermere is the most southerly with Crummock Water just down the valley to the north west. Loweswater is 2 miles beyond Crummock water to the north west and is unique in the lake district as it is the only lake that flows into the district.

Being surrounded by lofty fells on three sides and an easily negotiable path which circles the lake, it is obvious why Buttermere is so popular. The village sits between Buttermere and Crummock Water on the alluvial plain which now seperates the once single lake. Buttermere Dubs crosses the plain along its western edge and is Buttermere's outflow into Crummock Water. Crummock water outflows into the River Cocker which heads north along the Lorton Vale towards Cockermouth.

Road access to Buttermere is by the B5289 through Borrowdale and the Honister Pass, from Braithwaite via Newlands Hause and from the northwest via Lorton Vale.

Two campsites are available local to Buttermere & Crummock Water; Syke Farm at Buttermere village and Dalegarth at Hassness.
