About meI have a long standing association with landscape photography stretching back to my teens and was self-taught the basics of photography on a fully manual Zenit SLR. A camera with a love/hate relationship with photographers of the era, but one which I think was unarguably an excellent platform for learning the fundamentals of photography. House ownership, children and the cost of good photo processing saw my attentions diverted away from photography in the intervening years, but a rekindled interest in fell walking in the Lake District has provided the ideal opportunity for a return to landscape photography. I am currently based in the East Riding of Yorkshire but have a special interest in the Lake District. Being a 3 hour drive away from the south eastern corner of the lakes does however limit my ability to be responsive to ideal conditions, hence the conclusion that camping is the best type of accommodation. I don't mean most comfortable, but it is cheap, always available, flexible and allows me to sleep often within yards of a target location; whether that be on the banks of Ullswater or at the base of Sharp Edge on Blencathra. There's also no chance of being misunderstood by the B&B owners dog at 4.30 in a morning on the way out to a sunrise shoot. My photographic philosophy is to present scenes as nature intended; nature provides a never ending array of lighting conditions and I see it as a photographer's challenge to seek them out and record them. Not to emulate them in Photoshop if classic scenes have been missed. The replacement of skies, re-positioning of trees, addition of mountains and moons is, in my opinion, not photography - a form of art maybe, but not photography. For my sins, I am a perfectionist. My family (read wife) will testify to the frustrations which it can and has caused, but equally I am convinced that it is a pre-requisite for successful landscape photography. This website was started in mid-2008 and is a wholly DIY creation. I consider me to be a keen photography amateur (my website writing skills lag significantly) with a desire and aspiration for it to become a more significant part of my spare time. The need to be out there in the best places at the best times, coupled with the ability to capture nature's most dynamic and picturesque scenes, does make landscape photography a wonderful lifestyle. |
