Buttermere - Solitree in winter (SS-02302)

Buttermere - The lonely tree. Ref. SS-02302

Camping at Syke Farm is perfect for being right on the doorstep of both Buttermere and Crummock Water. This scene was witnessed on Buttermere at 5.15am and is almost the first view of the Lake after the five minute walk from the village.
I had high hopes of a perfect sunrise given the clear skies at 4.30 when clambering out of my tent onto the frosty grass, but the haze of the previous day was back by the time I reached the water's edge. It did however create the most incredibly atmospheric scene.
The crescent of the moon hanging over Haystacks was a bonus although a little muted through the haze. The old tree is such a pitiful specimen, but probably one of the most photographed in the region; giving credence to the thought, that youth isn't everything!

Date taken 21 March 2009.
Settings: Pentax K10D with 18-55mm lens @ 26mm. Exposure 1.0sec @ f/8.
